This edited collection highlights the unique cultural and socioeconomic elements of China and the strong influence of those elements on women leaders in the nation. The authors present perspectives on women leaders current state of working conditions and balancing of personal and professional lives in diverse contexts while discussing commonalities and differences across sectors in China and drawing comparisons with Asian and non-Asian contexts. Chapters explore cultural contexts that hinder career advancement, family roles for women, government policies and educational opportunities that support women's development, and finally the future for women in China. The book provides a thorough assessment of the situation of women in China for scholars in leadership, management, international relations, and human resource development. Jie Ke is Associate Professor of Human Resource Development in the College of Education and Human Development at Jackson State University, USA. Her research interests include Chinese HRD/management, evaluation and assessment, womens leadership development, Chinese family entrepreneurship, motivations and needs of adult undergraduates, and effectiveness of eLearning. She has recently published her study on women entrepreneurs of family businesses in China in Advances in Developing Human Resources. She serves on the Board of Directors and as Co-chairs of the International Committee and China Special Interest Group for the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD). Gary N. McLean (EdD, PhD hon) is professor in the PhD program in organization development (OD) at Assumption University, Bangkok, and adjunct professor in the PhD program in HROD at the National Institute for Development Administration (NIDA) in Bangkok. He is professor emeritus, human resource development, University of Minnesota, and former professor at Texas A&M University and International Islamic University, Malaysia. He is past editor of several refereed journals and served as President of AHRD and IMDA. He was President of McLean Global Consulting, a family business and has been active in OD for almost 50 years with an international focus. He received AHRDs Outstanding Book of the Year Award for both an authored OD book and a co-edited book on HRD in Vietnam. He has a lifelong interest in gender research.

In Confucian Constitutionalism, Sungmoon Kim presents a constitutional theory of democratic self-government that is normatively appealing and politically practicable in East Asia's historically Confucian societies, which are increasingly pluralist, multicultural, and rights sensitive. While Confucian political theorists are preoccupied with how to build a Confucianism-inspired institution that would make a given polity more meritorious, Kim offers a robust normative theory of Confucian constitutionalism--what he calls "Confucian democratic constitutionalism"--with special attention to value pluralism and moral disagreement. Aiming to contribute to both political theory and comparative law, Confucian Constitutionalism explains how Confucian democratic constitutionalism differs from and improves upon liberal legal constitutionalism, political constitutionalism, and Confucian meritocratic constitutionalism.

Concepts and patterns of Chinese migration are often described with terms such as guigen (return to one's original roots), shenggen (sprout local roots), shigen (lose original roots), wugen (without roots), and duogen (many roots). These terms, linked to the Mandarin word gen (roots), carry various meanings including home, citizenship, ethnicity, as well as local language, culture and society. In Southeast Asia, the predominant patterns of migration are shenggen/shigen, guigen, shenggen/shigen, wugen and/or duogen. These concepts represent the mainstream patterns during various periods, which may admittedly exist concurrently. The pattern in each particular period is influenced by an array of internal and external factors, such as colonial and subsequently government policies directed at migrants, as well as forces and opportunities afforded by globalization.

Disruptions as Opportunities: Governing Chinese Society with Interactive Authoritarianism addresses the long-standing puzzle of why China outlived other one-party authoritarian regimes with particular attention to how the state manages an emerging civil society. Drawing upon over 1,200 survey responses conducted in 126 villages in the Sichuan province, as well as 70 interviews conducted with Civil Society Organization (CSO) leaders and government officials, participant observation, and online research, the book proposes a new theory of interactive authoritarianism to explain how an adaptive authoritarian state manages nascent civil society. Sun argues that when new phenomena and forces are introduced into Chinese society, the Chinese state adopts a three-stage interactive approach toward societal actors: toleration, differentiation, and legalization without institutionalization. Sun looks to three disruptions--earthquakes, internet censorship, and social-media-based guerilla resistance to the ride-sharing industry--to test his theory about the three-stage interactive authoritarian approach and argues that the Chinese government evolves and consolidates its power in moments of crisis.
